Graduate Digital Research Fellowship

Building digital research skills through hands-on, interdisciplinary projects

The Graduate Digital Research Fellowship (GDRF) supports research students to explore how digital and computational methods can enhance their research and open up new ways of working with data.

GDRF commenced through the Australian Text Analytics Program (ATAP) in 2023 and has since continued under the Language Data Commons of Australia (LDaCA). Fellows spend 12–15 weeks developing practical digital research skills while applying new methods to their existing research or an independent digital project.

The program combines seminars and training with tailored mentoring, giving participants opportunities to explore methods such as computational text analysis, social media analytics, digital image analysis, data visualisation, digital heritage management and the analysis of spoken language. Projects are shaped by each Fellow’s research questions, encouraging participants to critically consider not only which digital tools they can use, but how those methods can contribute meaningfully to their research.

Since 2025, the GDRF has been delivered entirely online, expanding participation beyond South East Queensland and connecting Fellows with mentors and collaborators across Australia.

The GDRF taught me to think differently about how I treat my research workflow at almost every point. — Eve Ansell, 2023 GDRF Fellow
