IPrA2025: The Pragmatics of Indigenous Languages

The Pragmatics of Indigenous Languages panel showcased efforts by researchers and practitioners who are working with communities on the use of Indigenous languages in the Australian context, as well as to discuss the complex issues such work inevitably raises.

This IPrA2025 plenary panel on the Pragmatics of Indigenous Languages was sponsored by the Language Data Commons of Australia (LDaCA).

Panel participants:

Robyn Ober is a Mamu/Djirribal woman from Far North Queensland and Lead Researcher and educator at Batchelor Institute of Indigenous Tertiary Education.

Diana Eades is Adjunct Professor at the University of New England. She has worked for 4 decades on how Englishes are used by, to and about Aboriginal people in the legal system.

Tahlia Burchill-O’Brien is a Kuku Yalanji-warra Bama from the rainforest and saltwater country of the Daintree region in Far North Queensland and an independent researcher.

Samantha Disbray is senior lecturer in endangered Languages at the University of Queensland.
